‘Moments Undiscovered’ is a Spring/Summer 24 collection of four upcycled garments, accompanied by two textile lengths constructed from scrap fabrics and yarn gathered throughout the design process. Underpinning the collection is the theme of gratitude.

Existing in a commercial context, ‘Moments Undiscovered’ combats the association of novelty as ‘better’. The collection aims to shift the mindset of the consumer, encouraging appreciation for the items that already exist in their wardrobe. It is important to look at a garment that is perceived as old, unfashionable or unattractive, and to think not of its supposedly discardable nature, but of its hidden potential and upcycling possibilities. The consumer plays a significant role in mass production, and responsible consumption will prompt responsible production to follow.

Targeting a female Generation Z audience, ‘Moments Undiscovered’ highlights the beauty of upcycling. In a generation influenced by the acceleration of trends on social media, overconsumption is prevalent. The Generation Z consumer seeks self-expression, but this often takes the form of not re-wearing items and prioritising self-presentation over sustainability as they seek favourable perceptions in the eyes of others. ‘Moments Undiscovered’ aims to express that one can be both individualistic and sustainable without letting go of one of these values. Upcycling leads to one of a kind pieces that not only tackle the lack of individuality in mass production, but also offer sustainable alternatives to fast fashion.

Responding to the continued trend of nature as escapism, the colour palette is organic and nature-inspired to evoke comfort and relaxation. Watercolour illustration, digital printing and embroidery are key techniques involved in the collection. The natural fabric and threads are an ode to the beauty in the everyday world, while the motifs shine a spotlight on common, unassuming flora like daisies, wattles and eucalyptus leaves that are often overlooked. Illustrative and photographic elements are collaged together, creating subtle details and unexpected surprises that are discovered when looking closely – a representation of the awe and wonder that overcomes an individual when viewing the seemingly ordinary things around them a little closer. With the addition of three-dimensional embroidered elements and subtle patchwork, tactile surprises lie here and there, waiting to be discovered by a pair of patient eyes.

There is potential for ‘Moments Undiscovered’ to expand into an upcycling brand that teaches a young generation to practice conscious consumption in support of our planet. Old or unwanted items donated by customers themselves could be transformed into new and emotionally durable creations, demonstrating how one’s own garments may be repurposed and cherished for longer.
